Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not just the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
